"So much of the debate around free speech and Islamophobia and violence in France — and the applauded prophet cartoon that was released after the terrorist attacks—are about an insistence on the right to publicly practice racism. The right to publicly perform domination is of course an attribute of normative white euro-american masculinity—whether that dominance be racial, national or sexual. There is a difference between free speech and propaganda. Let’s not forget that France is at war with not only their French captive Arab/African Muslim populations, but it is also a part of the “War on Terror.” Propaganda seems to be a word that we are only comfortable with when we talk about the cultural production of past wars. But the historicity of the moment demands that we use it when describing the cartoon that was published post-attack (and pre). Must I say now that of course I am against the attacks and mourn all deaths and yes by the way I am Muslim and I still know the meaning of propaganda and of public practices of radicalized and gendered masculinity."

satire is “I’m going to take this concept to an extreme or absurd level in order to demonstrate how bizarre/nonsensical/illogical it is” and not “I said something bigoted but just kidding I didn’t really mean it hahaha”

just going to queue this to reblog forever
